Australia Post: Landed Costs Payment Options (Sender Pays vs Receiver Pays)

Choose who will pay import duties, taxes and fees (landed costs) for your Australia Post international shipments.

Written by Meegan

Update: Australia Post advised that Sender Pays options became available for supported EU destinations on 3 August 2026.

Visit the AusPost Global Customs Imports page for a breakdown of Sending arrangements by EU member states. This page will be updated as options become available.

About landed costs

International shipments may incur import duties, taxes and postal service fees. Together, these charges are known as landed costs.

ReadyToShip supports all Australia Post landed cost options and will automatically apply the correct option based on:

  • Any Tax IDs saved in ReadyToShip

  • Whether your Australia Post account is linked to a Zonos® Verified Account

  • The destination country’s requirements

  • The shipment value and eligibility requirements

  • Any order level override settings

You do not need to select a landed-cost option for each shipment.

Available landed costs options

ReadyToShip supports all Australia Post "landed costs" options. However, not every option is available for every destination or shipment.

Some countries require a particular landed-cost method. ReadyToShip automatically applies the required option where applicable.

Receiver Pays:

The recipient pays any applicable duties, taxes and fees before delivery.

Sender Pays (Zonos® Verified Account):

Applicable duties, taxes and fees are calculated, collected and remitted through the sender’s linked Zonos® Verified Account.

Sender Pays (Tax ID):

Eligible VAT collected at checkout is prepaid using the sender’s registered Tax ID, such as an IOSS, UK VAT or Norwegian VOEC registration.

⚠️ Important: Customs duties and any additional taxes or charges are not prepaid through the Tax ID for all EU countries, and may remain payable by the customer. Refer to the AusPost Global Customs Imports page for a breakdown of Sending arrangements by EU member states.

Receiver Pays

Receiver Pays is the default option for most international destinations when no applicable Tax ID has been saved and the destination does not require another payment method.

The United States is the exception. Shipments to the US must use Sender Pays (Zonos® Verified Account), which ReadyToShip applies automatically.

How Receiver Pays works

When using Receiver Pays:

  • Do not collect duties, taxes or other landed costs from your customer during checkout.

  • The destination country’s customs authority calculates the applicable charges.

  • Your customer must pay these charges before the parcel can be delivered.

How Receiver Pays works in ReadyToShip

No additional setup is required.

If you have not saved an applicable Tax ID in your ReadyToShip store settings, international shipments will generally use Receiver Pays unless the destination country requires another method.

Sender Pays (Zonos® Verified Account)

This option allows duties, taxes and fees to be prepaid before the parcel reaches its destination.

It is:

  • Mandatory for eligible shipments to the United States.

  • Available for supported destinations including:

    • Canada

    • United Kingdom

    • Germany

    • Denmark

    • Sweden

To use this option, your Australia Post account must be linked to a Zonos® Verified Account.

If you already use a Zonos® Verified Account for shipping to the United States, you can use the same account for other supported destinations.

⚠️ Important: If a Zonos® Verified Account is required but has not been linked correctly, label creation may fail or the shipment may be delayed, rejected or returned.

When using Sender Pays (Zonos® Verified Account)

  • Collect any applicable duties, taxes and fees from your customer during checkout.

  • Zonos® calculates and remits the applicable landed costs on your behalf.

  • Zonos® invoices you directly for the landed costs and any applicable service fees.

  • The Importer Reference Number OR Customs Reference field is automatically populated.

For assistance with your Zonos® account or billing, please contact Zonos® Support directly at APsupport@zonos.com.

Sender Pays (Tax ID)

This option is used when you have your own tax registration in the destination country and have saved the relevant registration number in your ReadyToShip store settings.

Supported registrations include:

  • IOSS (European Union)

  • UK VAT (United Kingdom)

  • NO VOEC (Norway)

Your shipment must meet the requirements for the applicable registration.

When using Sender Pays (Tax ID)

  • Collect any applicable taxes and duties from your customer during checkout.

  • Save your Tax ID in the appropriate field within your ReadyToShip store settings.

  • ReadyToShip will automatically submit your shipment using Sender Pays (Tax ID).

  • Your Tax ID is transmitted electronically with the shipment for customs processing.

  • Depending on the destination country, your customer may be responsible for paying any applicable duties or extra charges as calculated by the receiving countries customs, but the VAT collected at checkout will be prepaid.

⚠️ Important: If the order value exceeds Australia Post's supported threshold for that Tax ID, label creation will fail.

In this situation:

  1. Open the order.

  2. Change Submit Tax ID to No.

  3. Click Save.

  4. Create the label again.

We hope to automate this process once additional guidance is provided by Australia Post.

⚠️ Important information

Receiver Pays:

Receiver Pays is the default option for all supported destinations except the United States.

Only use this option if your customer will pay any applicable import duties, taxes and fees when the shipment arrives.

Sender Pays:

If you collect duties or taxes from your customer during checkout, you must use an appropriate Sender Pays method by either:

  • linking a Zonos® Verified Account, or

  • saving the relevant Tax ID in your ReadyToShip store settings.

You cannot mix payment methods:

You cannot combine Sender Pays and Receiver Pays for the same shipment.

  • If using Sender Pays, collect any applicable landed costs during checkout.

  • If using Receiver Pays, do not collect any duties or taxes during checkout.

Country requirements:

Some destinations require a specific landed cost method and do not allow alternative options. ReadyToShip will automatically apply the required method where applicable.

NZ GST (New Zealand)

Whilst we can submit your NZ GST registration number if provided, there is no "Sender Pays" options for New Zealand. All shipments to NZ will automatically be submitted as Receiver Pays.

Using the wrong landed cost option may result in customs delays, additional charges or returned shipments.
